Habitat Authority Awarded $10,000 -Hills For Everyone/So CA Edison Grant

The Habitat Authority is grateful to have received a $10,000 grant from Hills For Everyone and So CA Edison to enhance the hills.

Habitat enhancement of an 0.08 acre area adjacent to Colima Road, which is an important throughfare and staging area for firefighting occurred in the spring of 2025. Since there have been several fires along Colima Rd, targeting this area for habitat enhancement aids in reducing wildfire incidents.

In February the Habitat Authority hand seeded the 0.08 acres with a native Coastal Sage Scrub seed mix that had been collected on the Puente Hills Preserve and was provided free of charge. The hand-seeding labor was funded by the SCE\HFE grant. The restoration site had been hand cleared of weeds and thatch using a different funding source prior to seeding. Careful follow-up hand weeding occurred May 12-16 using SCE\HFE grant funds.  Several species of annual and perennial native plants have been observed germinating within the seeded habitat enhancement site, and additional grant funding has been secured for another round of weed management on the site to maintain the enhancement efforts that were achieved with the SCE/HFE grant.
