Love is in the air!
Coyote Breeding Season
During the months of January through March, love is in the air for coyotes as well as for bobcats and foxes! While coyotes are generally monogamous, during mating season it is common to notice an increase in coyote sightings as unpaired individuals look for potential mates. Reproduction takes place once per year, with an average of 3-7 pups born in a den sometime from March-May. Within two months, pups will emerge from their den to follow adults around and begin learning the way of the world. While coyotes are naturally wary of people, they are very adaptable and can habituate to human presence. To avoid wildlife-human conflicts, please keep the following tips in mind:
- Supervise your pets: walk dogs on a leash and keep cats indoors for safety
- Remove attractants: keep pet food indoors, pick up fallen fruit, and secure trash
- Keep coyotes wary: never intentionally feed coyotes. If approached, act big and scary to establish that you are dominant.
